The Getting Active Through Exercise (GATE) team promote the benefits of exercise in the over-65’s to improve health and prevent falls. The project offers exercise opportunities to all Manchester residents over the age of 65 from the most frail to the more active.
The project is the only one of its kind in Manchester. It is unique in the sense that there are no other such schemes that are solely working in the field of exercise to improve the health and well being of older people and also prevent the serious consequences of falls in this age group. The work of the project is significantly influenced by the recommendations of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence; National Service Framework for Older People and Delivering Choosing Health.
The team work closely with other health professionals, statutory agencies and the voluntary sector. This partnership approach has brought together a wide range of expertise to ensure that the older population benefit from an integrated range of services and resources. |

In line with the priorities identified in both ‘Delivering Choosing Health’ and the National Service Framework for Older People, the project supports those over the age of 65, providing them with physical activity opportunities to prevent falls and promote independence, health and well being.
The project operates in response to Standards 6 and 8 of the National Service Framework for Older People and forms part of Manchester’s integrated falls pathways. |
