Currently there are three programmes specifically around drug issues and delivered by the drugs and harm reduction team and sexual health and harm reduction team, these are;
The Juries Out!
A two day course providing a philosophical debate around the meaning of harm reduction. This course is aimed at providing the participants with the skills to have a debate on the subject from perspectives of for and against ‘harm reduction’ as applied to drug treatment and interventions.
The Bigger Picture!
A one day course examining the impact of blood borne viruses, such as HIV and hepatitis (B and C), upon drug users and health services. An examination of how this has changed the way in which services have responded to their needs. This course will provide a basic knowledge of how the infections are transmitted, preventative measures, testing issues and what treatment is available.
Life Support
A one day course aimed at providing information specifically aimed at life threatening situations with regard to substance misuse (including alcohol), most specifically, overdose and convulsions (fits). This course supports the participant to understand the risk factors that precipitate an overdose and what it means to ‘overdose’. The course provides the skills required to provide immediate basic life support and how to manage the situation where convulsions or fits occur. The training is supported by the Greater Manchester Ambulance Service as part of their initiative to reduce drug related deaths and incorporates the information regarding calling emergency services where illicit substances may be present, or have been used. |
External training can be offered to services upon request. Currently training is offered in conjunction with Manchester Drug Service for volunteer workers at drug agencies and Manchester Action on Street Health (MASH). |
