People in Manchester are 28% more likely to die of coronary heart disease (CHD)
CHD accounts for over half of all circulatory deaths and for a quarter of all deaths annually to Manchester residents. Some parts of Manchester have levels of mortality from CHD at one and a half times the national average. No wards in Manchester have levels of CHD that are significantly lower than the national average. Particularly affecting households on lowest income.
The National Service Framework for Coronary Heart Disease (NSF CHD), published in March 2000, set out a strategy to modernise CHD services over ten years. It details 12 standards for improved prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation and goals to secure fair access to high quality services. The standars which shape the strategy for MHDS are as follows:
Standard one: The NHS and partner agencies should develop, implement and monitor policies that reduce the prevalence of coronary risk factors in the population, and reduce inequalities in risks of developing heart disease.
The MPHDS continues to work closely with various agencies at a prevention/intervention level across the City; and specific groups across the Primary Care Trust.
Standard two: The NHS and partner agencies should contribute to a reduction in the prevalence of smoking in the local population. This area is covered by the Manchester Smoking Cessation Service.
In addition to the above, MPHDS continues to support CHD Risk Reduction Across Manchester through the provision of the following:
- Advice. The service provides informal advice about CHD risk reduction, and supporting organisations.
- Training. As part of the MPHDS’ comprehensive training programme CHD can be address in modules such as Promoting Physical Activity.
- Providing Resources. The service provides a range of resources for loan through the Resource Libraries, Click here. This includes books and journals, training packs, video and audio resources and display materials. In addition there are free leaflets available covering a range of topics that can be linked to CHD.
Other agencies that the MPHD Services works occasionally with at a local level include, exercise referral schemes, healthy living programmes and centres, and community groups. Here MPHDS works with such local health forums, supporting and developing communities to identify their health needs, develop solutions and direct the planning and delivery of their services. |
