Time please! Preventing and managing drunkenness


Using the evaluation of the Responsible Alcohol Sales project in 2009, this training package and its materials have been reviewed and refreshed for 2011. Face-to-face refresher training is being provided by PHDS to licensed premises across the City along with new customer signage and refusals advice to support premises to promote the licensing objectives.

Alcohol identification and brief advice (IBA) resources


  • Alcohol self-test (AUDIT) A4 copy of the 'gold' standard screening questionnaire with an integrated guide to popular alcoholic drinks and their unit and kcal content.
  • Brief advice about alcohol risk glossy visual aid and takeaway information to support the delivery of structured brief advice.
  • Posters for display A3 posters designed to reduce some of the barriers experienced by frontline staff when asking service users about their alcohol use.
  • A guide to encouraging people to drink less this guide accompanies face-to-face training and aims to help staff identify who is at risk of harm from their alcohol use and provide a brief intervention.

Drink Smart Self-Help Guide (2011)
Drink Smart has been designed as an illustrated self-help guide to support setting personal goals to drink less. In its third reprint in 2011, it includes useful facts about units and calories of common drinks, definitions of risk levels and a simple questionnaire to test-yourself, as well as tips and exercises for cutting down or having time off.

Alcohol Identification and Brief Advice Toolkit (2010)
Designed to support NHS and non-NHS staff carry out alcohol identification and brief advice as an integral part of practice. This toolkit provides posters for waiting areas/consulting rooms, copies of the validated identification tool AUDIT (Drink Check Self-Test), and an evidence based resource based on FRAMES principles (Drink Check Brief Advice Tool).

Alcohol Awareness Week 2010

Alcohol Factfile (2009)


The third edition of this factfile aims to support all NHS and non-NHS staff to deliver alcohol identification and brief advice (IBA) and is designed as a reference to alcohol training.
